DIFF PAN REPLACEMENT

If you ever ground your defender front axle out on a rock and crease the diff pan (in a bloody car park of all places!!!!) then take my advice. DO NOT buy a diff guard, then tighten it up too tight so your creased diff pan turns into a split diff pan.....

I ordered the replacement pan and chiselled of the old one (access is a pain)

Once off clean it up with a grinder after you have covered the diff gears.

Then weld on the new pan when its all very clean. This was a major pain in the butt for me because I failed to engage my brain before I started. You see, I forgot the diff casing would be cast and the pan would be mild, so I charged ahead with mild steel rods and proceeded to splatter everywhere. Not fun upside down, even less fun when you find a pin prick leak that takes another few hours to sort out after draining the diff again. Even less fun when you only realise why you had difficulty welding a week later when your father-in-law points out the obvious mistake.....oh arse.....

Once welded and leak free, paint with some black type paint of your choice and refit your diff guard....just don't whack up the bolts too tight this time....
