LOCK BARRELS
Quite simply, I got tired of opening the Defender locks with a 2pence piece. So I ordered some new lock barrels and this is how they fit.
First of all you need to remove your door furniture from inside then remove the plastic door card (if you have one in your Defender). Then you can marvel at the rust that greets you (to be fair, this is the only original door, the rest are new.

Then you need to look at the back of the handle and see this screw (arrow). As suggested by Mmgemmini on LR4x4, drill a hole (circled) so you can get a screw driver to the screw. Remove the screw and pull the arm of it.

Then push from the inside and the whole barrel will come out the front......then you can see all the crud preventing your lock from working. Now TAKE NOTE! Look at the picture below. That 2cm long extension on the end of the old lock needs to go on the new one. Mine was seized solid and took an hour to get off by drilling the old lock out of it. its a pain of a job. So if you do it BUY that extra bit first. You don't need one for the rear door, just for the sides doors. IF it isn't seized then you just press the little brass pin (arrow) and you can withdraw the lock barrel.

The rest is just simple re-assembly. I put plenty of grease on my new barrels prior to refitting. I'm not saying that's the right thing to do...it just seemed like a good idea.
