Boot Floor / Body

At first glance I niavely thought "just a patch and a boot hinge rail..." I should have known better, but then it was 16 year or so since I'd welded a mini boot up.

As you can see, all the rot was cut out. The boot hinge panel, the rear valance, the end of the floor and the valance closing plates were rotten. I chose to buy a copy panel hinge rail as I have fitted a lot in my time and I know I can make them fit ok. If you new to this and have no panel beating experience then I would say buy heritage panels. A good pannel guy can make the hinge fit perfectly in 30 minutes, but if you just weld it in place as it arrives then it will look pretty poor. Be prepared to fiddle with it....unless your extremely lucky.

Some of the outer lip needed reproducing, nothing much (other side was the same), then I made a repair section from sheet steel. you can buy these if you prefer not to make your own. Because of the size, and where it would be, I chose to make it in two halfs, simply because its easier than working with one car wide repair patch.

Once welded in I finished the weld back a touch. Not much mind, it's only the boot floor so I'm not overly fussy on cosmetics under the spare wheel! Once the floor is in I align the hinge rail (check it fits with the boot lid!) then weld the ends and spot weld it to the floor (plug weld).

I painted the inside with Por15. The underside with stone chip, Por15 and I'll waxoyle it when the cars painted. The Valance is easy to fit, but they often require stretching a little.  I always start from one end, fit it so its in the correct position, then move to the other side of the car and stretch that into place. They inevitably seem to be too small rather than too large! Once the ends are fixed then move to the middle at the rear and drag it into place with a screwdriver through the middle bumper mount hole. If you start in the middle first I always find it harder to do. I make the end closing plates out of two bits of steel, theres one bit below (my hand is in the picture).

That's it. Boot floor done.
