TYRES

Ok, Not normally a topic of conversation in may circles (pun not intended), but in Land Rover land, everyone has a view on tyre choice. For what its worth, here's mine. I drive 95% of the time on road. When not on road, I drive on surfaces that would in no way be called extreme (I hate that word...) - see below

When it came to replacing the four tyres I looked around at the options and it seemed to boil down to three things:

Size - It was already on 7.50 x16 tyres (Goodrich Track Edge & Avon Rangemasters in the past). I liked the size, nice & high, looked good and gave good clearance. Wider would have looked nice, but I drive long runs and wanted a nice diving size that wouldn't affect turning circle or economy any further. The "equivalent size" for the 7.50 is 235/85/16. ...255's would have been wider, 205 narrower..

Price - I'm not skint, but if you trash a £50 tyre then your half a peeved than if you trash a £100 tyre. I don't buy into the "high performance road grip" rubbish as I drive within the limits of the vehicle and I don't speed (well, maybe I hit 74mph on the motorway, but that's it). So for 4x Remould (Colway C-Trac) I'm looking at £220 fitted. For 4X Goodrich I'm looking at £430 fitted. Common reports of 60,000mile from Goodrich were good, but common reports of 45,000 mile from Colway were equally impressive at half the price.

Use - Mud tyres look good, but  95% road work and 5% "country track" work didn't need them. A road tyre would get stuck, so it was the obvious "all terrain" choice for tyres.

I liked the Track Edge I had, but they were no longer available. The Goodrich AT tread got good reviews and the Colway A/T used that very pattern. I eventually sourced them locally (there made in Durham, not that far from me) and had them fitted.  Result = excellent. very low road noise, softer ride and handle noticeably better than my old Avon Rangemesters.

Rangemaster as a spare and a new Colway C-Trac A/T.
